A call to action from VIO directors: FG must step up regulation and enforcement of road transport

In order to ensure efficient road transportation, the VIO (Vehicle Inspection Officers)—a group consisting of directors and chief road traffic officers—have urged the federal government to establish strict regulations, employ competent administrators, develop cutting-edge transportation technologies, and strictly enforce these regulations.

On Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 Annual National Conference of Directors and Chief Road Traffic Officers of the Federation, Charles Elechi, who is the Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Transportation Secretariat, made this request.

Vehicles must be in good repair, drivers must hold valid licenses, and regulatory bodies must have sufficient resources, in his opinion.

He emphasised that the government must act quickly to address issues such as public ignorance, inconsistent standards, disjointed data systems, and insufficient funding for inspection facilities.

Abubakar Yeldu, director of the Federal Capital Territory’s directorate of road traffic services, also voiced the need for government-wide measures to increase enforcement and rebuild trust in regulatory bodies.

According to Yeldu, threatening law enforcement officers can reduce their willingness to follow traffic laws, putting drivers and passengers in danger.

Durojaye Olalekan, the conference’s national chairman, claimed that major institutional inadequacies had been revealed by problems with driver license and vehicle inspection.

Rather than viewing it as a professional system for safeguarding lives, Olalekan voiced his concern that motor vehicle administration was frequently seen as a revenue-generating activity.
