A proposed constitutional amendment that would enable the creation of state police has been adopted by the Osun State House of Assembly.
After discussing the National Assembly’s request, the legislators unanimously approved the plan during Tuesday’s plenary.
Speaker Adewale Egbedun informed the House that state legislatures around Nigeria had received a letter from the National Assembly requesting their consideration and approval of the proposed constitutional amendments.
“The amendment had been forwarded to the House for its consideration and approval as part of the constitutional amendment processes,” he stated.
Taofeek Olayiwola of the Ede South State Constituency and Lawrence Adeoti of the Ife South State Constituency both supported the plan throughout the debate.
They claimed that establishing state police would enhance security and enable authorities to react to security issues more swiftly.
Jeremiah Awoyeye, representing Ife Central State Constituency, and Adewumi Adeyemi, representing Obokun State Constituency, both said the plan was timely. State police, according to the MPs, would improve security at the state and municipal government levels.
The constitutional amendment, according to them, would “improve the ability of states to provide adequate security personnel and respond more effectively to security challenges within their respective jurisdictions.”
After the discussion, a proposal to approve the proposed modification was made by the Assembly’s majority leader, Babajide Kofoworola, who represents the Ede North State Constituency.
The motion was seconded by Tajudeen Adeyemi, who represents the Ifelodun State Constituency.
During the meeting, the Osun State Park Management System Bill, 2026 was also discussed by the legislators.
Before approving the suggested changes and adjustments to the measure, the House convened a Committee of the Whole.
