Suspected AI-generated images in voters’ registry under investigation by INEC

Questions regarding the images surfaced in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to launch an investigation into allegations that its preliminary voters’ registry contained photos created by artificial intelligence.

The commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee Chairman, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, made the announcement public on October 27.

According to INEC, the physical registers seen in Registration Areas around the country from October 9–15 were identical to the online version issued on October 26.

Additionally, it was noted that documents that were deemed dubious throughout the exercise had been marked for additional investigation.

“The statement said that the Commission will take appropriate action based on verified findings,” adding that they are also looking into what may have led to the questionable photos, whether that be due to technological or procedural errors.

The panel emphasised that the register was still in its preliminary state and that it will undergo further verification and corrections before being validated as the official Register of Voters on December 15, 2026.
