After a video went viral, JIBWIS leaders turned over a 22-year-old suspect to the authorities

Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun, a 22-year-old resident of Zamfara State, was apprehended by the Nigerian police on suspicion that a video he posted online could incite religious extremism.

In a statement released on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, revealed the suspect was being probed in relation to the video.

According to the police, the video shows a young guy in the uniform of Jama’atu Izalatil Bidi’a Wa’ikamatus Sunnah, JIBWIS, making remarks that might be seen as a danger to public order and harmonious coexistence.

Authorities claimed that national and state-level JIBWIS leaders had absolved the group of responsibility for the alleged actions and turned over the suspect to them.

According to the Force, if enough proof is found, the suspect will face charges in a competent court.

There was a strong message to not spread the video or any unsubstantiated accusations that could inflame religious tensions in Nigeria.

In a statement, the police promised to “take appropriate lawful action” against any behaviour that could anger religious hate, provoke violence, or endanger public peace.
