From Friday, October 16, to Sunday, October 18, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Works will undertake critical repairs on Independence Bridge in Lagos Island. As a result, the Lagos State Government has scheduled a three-day traffic diversion on the bridge.
According to a government statement, the repair work will include resurfacing the asphalt and would need the temporary closure of certain sections of the bridge. This will ensure that cars can still access the area throughout the construction.
The asphalt construction is set to start at nite on Friday, October 16, and go all day and nite on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.
To keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible, we will be closing off sections of the bridge’s inbound and outbound lanes in stages, leaving one lane available at all times so drivers can get where they’re going.
In order to reach their targeted destinations during the repairs, motorists are encouraged to carefully plan their movements and consider using alternative routes, according to the statement.
The statement claims that officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be sent out to control traffic in the area so that repairs can be done with as little interruption as possible.
Drivers are asked by the government to be patient, follow the rules of the road, and help with traffic control measures while the repairs are underway.
