Representatives: SEDC mandate to address horrific repercussions of civil war

The commission’s mandate, according to Hon. Chris Nkwonta, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC), will provide a chance to address the infrastructural deficit, decades of neglect, and the catastrophic impacts of the civil war in all five states in the region.

While his committee was visiting the commission for oversight, the congressman revealed this.

With the SEDC headquarters up and running, he was hopeful that “the historic philosophy of the Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation formulated after the Nigerian Civil War into practical development programs for the Southeast region,” as he put it.

He claimed that the commission will help restore federal highways, public buildings, and city centers as well as promote economic growth and development through its inclusive economic programs and strategic interventions.

The Enugu State Government generously provided the commission’s headquarters, a four-story complex, and its managing director, Mr. Mark Okoye, told reporters during the visit that the new digs would greatly improve the organization’s ability to execute its job.

On the other hand, he elaborated on how the building would consolidate the commission’s operations by housing its departments, senior management, and staff in one place, which would enhance collaboration, strategy development, and project management.

According to him, the deal will streamline administrative processes, promote planning for the future, and make it easier to put regional development master plans into action quickly.

Operating from a rent-free building would reduce overhead and real estate costs, which the Managing Director pointed out as another financial benefit of the facility. This would enable the commission to redirect more resources toward important development projects, road construction, and community-based interventions.

Okoye stated that the headquarters would be a center for fostering collaboration among the five Southeast states and promoting projects that might encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the region.

He mentioned the Southeast Venture Capital Program, which was established in May 2026, as an initiative that aims to support young tech innovators, create innovation hubs, and combat the problem of youth migration to other economic centers, especially Abuja and Lagos.

According to Okoye, the facility will also help the commission’s proposed Southeast Investment Company bring in more investment.

He elaborated by saying the program would serve as a hub for several development projects around the region, bringing together private investors, diaspora members, and other financial sources.
